model fuels

Model fuels are simplified chemical compositions representing the real fuel in terms of specific properties.

Real fuels such as fossil diesel and kerosene or its synthetic derivatives consist of more than hundred components. The chemical reaction pathes of most of the components are unknown.

In order to allow to numerically simulate a combustion process, simple mono- or bicomponent surrogates are needed with known chemical reaction mechanisms.

It is a particular challenge to find model fuel compositions that

  • consist only of one or two components
  • components that exists also in the related real fuel
  • components with known reaction schemes
  • represent real fuel behavior for e.g.

    • vaporization
    • ignition
    • combustion
    • heat release rate
    • soot formation
    • nitric oxide formation

Within this projects model fuels are developed to represent the ignition behavior of fossil diesel, fossil kerosene, BTL-diesel, Bio-diesel and BTL-kerosene.

Important selection criteria are (beside others):

  • Boiling temperature
  • Cetane number
  • vapor pressure
