New system for oxygen extraction in weightlessness
Drop tower experiment proves that magnets can provide a simpler method of oxygen provision for astronauts
Providing oxygen to astronauts aboard the International Space Station and other spacecraft is a complicated and costly process. Álvaro Romero-Calvo of the University of Colorado Boulder has now demonstrated that magnetism helps to separate oxygen bubbles from water. For future missions to the moon or Mars, this would be an important step toward making oxygen production systems lighter and more energy efficient.
